    AIRBAG STATISTICS

Airbags are plastic cushions that inflate in a fraction of a second immediately after the first contact of a serious vehicle crash. They are operated by sensors which measure the severity of an impact and if the impact is above the deployment threshold then the sensors signal inflators to fill the bags with harmless gas which occurs within a fraction of a second to the restrain occupants of the car. Most cars have frontal airbags and increasing numbers of vehicles also have side airbags that deploy in side impact crashes.

  • Over 60% of the cars and light trucks on U.S. roads have driver airbags, and over 50% also have passenger airbags.
  • Both lap and shoulder safety belts should be worn. Failure to wear a belt reduces the value of auto accident settlements.
  • Fatalities in frontal crashes are reduced by over a quarter for drivers using safety belts and about a third for drivers without safety belts as a result of airbag deployment.
  • Deaths in frontal crashes are substantially reduced however, deaths are about a third higher than expected among child passengers younger than 10.
  • Over 10,000 people are alive today, who would otherwise have died in traffic accidents, because of their airbags.
  • The combination of an airbag and a seat belt reduces the risk of serious head injury by 85 percent compared with a 60 percent reduction for belts alone.
  • Airbags have also been responsible for the deaths of over 200 people over half of which were children.
  • The force of the airbag is greatest in the first 2-3 inches after the airbag bursts through the cover, which combined with the effect of pre crash braking may cause the head to be thrown toward the dashboard area.
  • Children and smaller adults are at greatest danger and injuries can include whiplash, spinal chord injuries, blindness, chest injuries and brain damage.
